Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Segal Chamber Music |
26th July 2010 No Format |
| Chamber Music was recorded in one bare room in Salif Keita’s Moffou studio in Mali, in three recording-sessions without overdubs. The complicity of these two musicians is such that the kora and the cello, far from resulting in an overly formal exchange of rejoinders, seem to express themselves here with a single voice. Chamber Music is an album of crystal purity and put simply, quite, quite stunning. Christine Tobin & Liam Noble
Tapestry Unravelled |
28th June 2010 Trail Belle Records |
| Unadorned and unaffected, Tapestry Unravelled finds Tobin exploring the songs that comprise Carole King’s landmark album with accompaniment from wonderful pianist Liam Noble. A deeply personal album, Tapestry Unravelled is a powerful, fragile, eloquent work. From the upbeat ‘Beautiful’, here a compelling opener, to the majestic ‘I feel the Earth Move’, plaintive ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ and luminous ‘Tapestry’, Tobin’s decision to eschew self-conscious re-arrangements in favour of frank, almost brutally exposed explorations reaps rich reward with a reading as richly romantic and subtly radical as King’s great songs demand. www.christine-tobin.com For further information please contact kerstan@riotsquadpublicity.com | ||

Half Seas Over
Half Seas Over |
3rd May 2010 Brownswood Recordings |
| Half Seas Over is the collaboration between acclaimed pianist Elan Mehler and the stunning young singer-songwriter Adam McBride-Smith. Having worked together on Elan’s 2009’s The After Suite, their flourishing partnership saw them create an astonishing batch of tender, richly cinematic songs that draw equally on folk, Americana, jazz, and country-rock . The recording represents the midway point where two musical styles converge - Mehler’s wistful, brooding air with McBride-Smith’s alt-country leanings - yet seems perfectly at ease in its hybrid state, as described by Adam: “something both strange and strangely familiar For further information please contact julie@riotsquadpublicity.com | ||

Jerry Dammers Spatial A.K.A Orchestra Jerry Dammers, founder of The Specials and 2 Tone records, writer of Ghost Town and Free Nelson Mandela, started his 18 piece orchestra as a “tribute band” to space jazz maverick Sun Ra. Dammers has now expanded the repertoire….. from Cedric “Im” Brookes’ spiritual reggae, to Alice Coltrane’s eastern mysticism…… from Tommy McCook’s deep jazzy ska, to Martin Denny’s dark exotica… and even to one or two versions of Dammers’ own songs. Some of the country’s best jazz musicians perform, with occasional vocalists, inside Dammers’ rhythmic setting , which draws on funk, reggae, rock , and recent styles such as hip hop, jungle or dubstep. The orchestra has received rave reviews from both jazz and rock/pop critics…. in Dammers’ words, “aimed at everyone”. There is also a vivid visual and theatrical element. 4th Mar - Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry 5th Mar - Dome, Brighton 7th Mar - Lighthouse, Poole 10th Mar - The Anvil, Basingstoke 26th Mar - The Sage, Gateshead 30th Mar - Bridgewater Hall, Manchester 31st Mar - Usher Hall, Edinburgh 1st Apr - Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool 7th Apr - Colston Hall, Bristol 9th Apr - Royal & Derngate, Northhampton Visit: www.jerrydammers.com For further information please contact kerstan@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Official Launch of the Fluid Piano featuring Geoff Smith, Pam Chowhan, Nikki Yeoh, Matthew Bourne with special guests to be announced The Fluid Piano has taken the musical world by storm since it was first reported on in The Guardian in November 2009 and publically unveiled at the University of Surrey shortly after. If you can imagine an acoustic piano with no tuning restrictions, a piano with an immense diversity of ‘bespoke‘ tuning layouts and ‘indigenous’ scales from around the world (e.g. from Middle Eastern cultures) and a piano that even allows you to alter the tuning whilst playing - or simply to remain in the standard ‘western’ tuning should you wish, then you have the Fluid Piano. Invented by musician and composer Geoff Smith, the concert will showcase works specifically written for this new instrument plus there will be some very special guests confirmed nearer the show. 27th March - Purcell Room, South Bank Click here to download the press release For further information please contact sian@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Portico Quartet Described as being like an Indy band that plays post-jazz, Portico Quartet (Nick Mulvey hang drum, Duncan Bellamy drums, Milo Fitzpatrick double bass and Jack Wyllie saxophones and electronics) play melodic, beautiful, rhythmic music that mixes the inspiration of Philip Glass and Steve Reich with a very contemporary kind of jazz improvisation. It’s the blend of ethereal saxophone, the steel pan-like Hang, clattering drums and earthy double-bass that gives their music it’s unique, beautiful sound and that has seen them compared to the Radiohead, E.S.T and The Cinematic Orchestra amongst others. Their new album ‘Isla’, produced by legendary producer John Leckie was released to critical acclaim last October. 5th Mar - Pontardawe Arts Centre, Swansea 8th Mar - Barbican, London 11th Mar - Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal 12th Mar - Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool 13th Mar - The Sage Gateshead 14th Mar - Band On The Wall, Manchester 16th Mar - South Hill Park Wilde Theatre, Bracknell 18th Mar - Turner Sims, Southampton 19th Mar - De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill 20th Mar - Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry 21st March - Royal & Derngate, Northampton For further information please contact sian@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Robert Glasper Brooklyn based pianist Robert Glasper brings a genuine understanding of hip hop to his music. But where some jazzers add samples and beats in an attempt to ground their music in contemporary culture, Glasper’s music is a far more organic affair as he takes rhythms and grooves from hip hop and adds them to his already formidable trio’s powerful arsenal. 8th & 9th Feb - Ronnie Scotts, London For further information please contact kerstan@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Pat Metheny - Orchestrion Orchestrion brings a musical idea from the late 19th and early 20th centuries - a large mechanical multi-instrument device that utilises actual orchestral instruments of various types, called an “orchestrion” - to the technologies of today. Metheny’s concept includes a large ensemble of acoustic instruments - including several pianos, drum kit, marimbas, “guitar-bots”, dozens of percussion instruments and even cabinets of carefully tuned bottles. Through Metheny’s guitar and compositional mind, five new original pieces showcase the instruments as they are struck, plucked, and otherwise played via the technology of solenoid switches and pneumatics. Metheny worked for months with a brilliant team of scientists and engineers to develop and assemble the “New Orchestrion” for this project, which he will perform with 'solo'. 10th February - Barbican For further information please contact sian@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Trichotomy Inspired by a diverse range of influences from Aphex Twin to Vijay Iyer, and Tortoise to The Bad Plus, Australian trio Trichotomy’s music combines a dense rhythmic focus with the melodic clarity of a Pat Metheny, Brad Mehldau or Stravinsky. And like fellow Australians The Necks, whom they cite as an early influence, there is a remarkable attention to detail and a desire to allow ideas to develop naturally within their music. A key focus is the balance between piano/bass/drums, with the trio maintaining a free flowing three way conversation with no one dominating and all contributing integral parts. They tour here in support of their UK debut release, Variations.
