Best of Prestige Various - The Very best of Prestige Records
Celebrating 60 years of Prestige - 2nd November 2009

This collection celebrates the 60th anniversary of Prestige Records.  Founded in 1949, as a tiny independent record label it has grown to become iconic in documenting an era when jazz was in its golden age. Standing at the cutting edge of modern jazz, it has recorded such giants as Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, Thelonious Monk, the Modern Jazz Quartet, and John Coltrane, and went on to became the leading purveyor of acid jazz with Jack McDuff, Charles Earland, and others.  This recording features the very best from the labels first two decades; 1949–1969 when jazz made great evolutionary strides, from bebop to soul jazz.

Gwyneth Herbert is inspired as much by Janis Ian and Joni Mitchell, as by Billie Holliday or Nina Simone. In 2007 her Seb Roachford produced album was picked up by Blue Note. Her latest collection, All The Ghosts (Naim Edge/Monkey Wood) features ten terrific songs, populated by a living, breathing cast of beaten-down dreamers, jaded city-dwellers, and women in a quandary. These, simply, are songs about people, about life, as the singer has precociously learnt to understand them at her tender age.

Blue Note
Wynton Marsalis’ fifth Blue Note recording, He and She. It’s an ambitious effort, combining spoken word and music. Featuring some formidable charts the album is tempered with flashes of humour and plenty of swing. He and She is about that eternally compelling and most elemental of subjects, the relationship between a man and a woman. Marsalis hasn’t merely crafted a love story, but a life story – a bittersweet rumination about the evanescence of life as well as the elusiveness of romance. Down load press release here.

'The musical equivalent of splitting the atom' The Guardian

After ten years of what has been a professional and personal struggle, inventor, musician and composer Geoff Smith will be unveiling and showcasing his historic invention, the first ever Fluid Piano™. This liberates the instrument from the restrictions of ‘western’ tuning to make the Fluid Piano™ the first ‘multi-cultural’ Acoustic piano. The event will include performances by the inventor, composers/pianists Matthew Bourne, Nikki Yeoh and Pam Chowhan.

Founded in 1998, the F-IRE (Fellowship for Integrated Rhythmic Expression) Collective has been one of the prime driving forces behind the creative expansion of London’s fertile, imaginative music scene. Originally founded by saxophonist Barak Schmool, it was partly inspired by Django Bates’ Delightful Precipie (or which Barak was a member) and Loose Tubes as well as Barak’s experimental community bands Akwaaba drum orchestra, Méta Méta and Rhythms of the City.

Initial members included the likes of  Eska Mtungwazi, Robert Mitchell, Tom Skinner, Iian Pattinson, Nick Ramm, Tom Herbert, Leo Taylor and David Okumu. While others were drawn to F-IRE for a varity of reasons; Ingrid Laubrock, Ben Davis and Jonny Phillips through their interest in studying African rhythms; Maurizio Ravalico and Finn Peters through their involvement in the Afro-Cuban Music of Méta Méta; Pete Wareham and Seb Rochford through their connection with Tom Herbert; Justin Quinn, Tom Arthurs and Jonathan Bratoëff through their involvement with F-IRE jazz workshops led by Stéphane Payen who performs a rare London show here.

This four night min-fest presents many of the founder members in new collaborations, alongside concerts from some of the capitals most creative bands and presents premieres from Ingrid Laubock and Tom Arthurs, while a rare London show from Stéphane Payen highlights the collective’s strong links with similar musicians in Paris. Individually and collectively the festival presents an unmissable snap shot of creativity and the beauty of collective music making.

Neil Cowley Trio Buffalo Collision: Tim Berne/Ethan Iverson/Hank Roberts/Dave King

The album ‘DUCK’ released February 2nd on Screw Gun records.

Comprising two generations of improvisors – long-time collaborators Tim Berne and Hank Roberts are legends of the NYC Downtown music scene while Ethan Iverson and Dave King are members of The Bad Plus who grew up listening to Berne and Roberts.

Their music, all improvised, has a definate character of it’s own and they display an uncanny musical synergy creating funky, fractured and beautiful music that is unforgettable.

'The Buffalos veer from fragmented abstraction to near-funky Philly grooving, working on an engaging tension between these two traits, each constantly jostling for dominance'
AllAboutJazz

"This is is a quartet that's hard to conceive of, until you hear it - they combine the tight, spiky contemporary jazz impulses of cult covers band The Bad Plus with those of New York downtown saxophonist Tim Berne."
