Finn Peters Music of the Mind |
1st November 2010 Mantella Records |
| A truly unique project, Music Of The Mind is where art and science meet. It is the culmination of a two year project working with renowned scientist Dr Mick Grierson utilizing pioneering Brain Interface technology that allows musicians to literally think music into being. From mapping his brainwaves in a variety of different ways, Peters has created music that falls somewhere between Kraftwerk and Sun Ra and draws on influences from ‘60s sci-fi funk, and the avant garde disco of Arthur Russell. See Tour Dates (click-through) for details of the Science Museum launch where members of the public can try the technology for themselves.

Gwyneth Herbert Clangers & Mash |
8th November 2010 Naim Edge |
| Gwyneth Herbert is an artist who continues to redefine (and defy) our expectations. A singer-songwriter with one foot in the jazz world and one somewhere in the future, with pierrot-dotted eyes, polka-spotted shoes and swanny whistle in hand she may appear as whimsical as a Bonzo Dog, but writes beautiful melodies and has a poet’s grasp of the world around her. Her song-writing has been compared to Lennon and McCartney, Ray Davies and Janis Ian, while musically her influences range from the junk yard clunk of Tom Waits to the banging drum ‘n’ bass of Hackney’s pirate stations. Clangers & Mash is an inspired mini-album of old stuff, out takes, bedroom ditties and ace new stuff. Lovely.

Killer Shrimp Whatever Sincerely; Tales from the Baltic Wharf |

Their dazzling compositions take in funk, reggae, rock and drum’n’bass, with Brown adding vocals to two tracks. The Bird and The Bee A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates |
23rd August 2010 Blue Note |
| Making sublime, sophisticated pop music can be tougher than it sounds. The Bird and The Bee, the duo of singer Inara George and multi-instrumental/Grammy-nominated producer Greg Kurstin, know this not only from the experience of composing original material for their previous full-lengths, The Bird and The Bee (2007) and Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future (2009), but also occasional forays into the catalogs of other songwriters. Having previously put their stamp on the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” and the standards “Tonight You Belong To Me” and “Autumn Leaves,” for Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates the pair devotes almost an entire album to the songs of two artists that hold a special place in their hearts.

Bill Charlap & Renne Rosnes
Double Portrait |
23rd August 2010 Blue Note |
| It is with no small dosage of irony that highly acclaimed jazz pianists Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes close their dynamic new duo piano album with the timeless standard “Never Will I Marry.” Marry, they have, and happily marry, they do—in musical terms—on Double Portrait, a high point in their respective careers, and the first recorded example of what must be considered one of the finest and most empathetic piano duos in jazz history. Double Portrait is a work of significance and depth, but also flows with the casual and organic quality of musicians with an uncommon simpatico, in life as well as in art. www.bluenote.com For further information please contact kerstan@riotsquadpublicity.com | ||

Jason Moran & The Band Wagon
Ten |
23rd August 2010 |
| In 1999, the same year that Jason Moran released his debut recording Soundtrack To Human Motion, the prodigy pianist and composer also joined New Directions, a band made up of young stars from the Blue Note roster that went on tour in celebration of the label’s 60th anniversary. At the core of New Directions was the genesis of a rhythm section—with Moran, bassist Tarus Mateen, and drummer Nasheet Waits—that would go on to become one of the most enduringly creative piano trios in jazz. Ten years later, the trailblazing trio—which Moran has since dubbed The Bandwagon—headed into Avatar Studios in Manhattan to record Ten, the most assured and focused album of Moran’s acclaimed career, a snapshot of a mature band with a decade of shared musical experience from which to draw. www.bluenote.com For further information please contact kerstan@riotsquadpublicity.com | ||

Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Segal Chamber Music |
26th July 2010 No Format |
| Chamber Music was recorded in one bare room in Salif Keita’s Moffou studio in Mali, in three recording-sessions without overdubs. The complicity of these two musicians is such that the kora and the cello, far from resulting in an overly formal exchange of rejoinders, seem to express themselves here with a single voice. Founded as Misinterprotato in 1999 when the three members met whilst studying at the Queensland Conservatorium, their unique sound is driven by award winning pianist Sean Foran, expansive, dynamic percussionist John Parker, and visceral double bassist Patrick Marchisella. Pat Metheny
Orchestrion |
25th January 2010 Nonesuch |
| With a project that redefines solo performance, Pat Metheny's Orchestrion brings a musical idea from the late 19th and early 20th centuries - a large mechanical multi-instrument device that utilises actual orchestral instruments of various types, called an “orchestrion” - to the technologies of today. Through Metheny’s guitar and compositional mind, five new original pieces showcase the instruments as they are struck, plucked, and otherwise played via the technology of solenoid switches and pneumatics.

Portico Quartet
Portico Quartet play a special two day residency at the ICA in December and they have invited fearlessly inventive folktronica whiz Leafcutter John to join them on Friday and trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf on Saturday. Electronica meets 21st century-jazz in Portico Quartet’s melodic, rhythmic music that mixes the inspiration of Philip Glass and Steve Reich with a very contemporary kind of jazz improv. It’s the blend of ethereal saxophone, splattering electronics, otherworldly Hang, clattering drums and earthy double-bass that gives their music it’s unique sound. Their hook-laden, darkly atmospheric post-jazz has pushed them to the forefront of the contemporary music scene and their inimitable sound that has been compared to Radiohead, E.S.T and The Cinematic Orchestra amongst others. 3 Dec ICA, London – Portico Quartet + Leafcutter John Intrepidly innovative Leafcutter John is a multi-talented musician, songwriter, remixer, and member of avant-jazz collective Polar Bear, he melds found and processed sounds with acoustic instrumentals into a seamless and haunting mix. 4 Dec ICA, London – Portico Quartet + Ibrahim Maalouf Ibrahim Maalouf, Photo: Denis Rouvre French/Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf combines jazz and classical Arabic music. Haunting, melancholic and subtle his sound flows between cultures. For further information please contact sian@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Robin returns to the UK for one exclusive date performing tracks from her new recording due for release early 2011. This time however, Robin shuns the classic repertoire and 40’s styling’s in favour of a magnificent set of old school rhythm ‘n’ blues, soul and jazz with a distinct 60’s flavour. Jerry Dammers Spatial A.K.A Orchestra Jerry Dammers, founder of The Specials and 2 Tone records, writer of Ghost Town and Free Nelson Mandela, started his 18 piece orchestra as a “tribute band” to space jazz maverick Sun Ra. Dammers has now expanded the repertoire….. from Cedric “Im” Brookes’ spiritual reggae, to Alice Coltrane’s eastern mysticism…… from Tommy McCook’s deep jazzy ska, to Martin Denny’s dark exotica… and even to one or two versions of Dammers’ own songs. Some of the country’s best jazz musicians perform, with occasional vocalists, inside Dammers’ rhythmic setting , which draws on funk, reggae, rock , and recent styles such as hip hop, jungle or dubstep. The orchestra has received rave reviews from both jazz and rock/pop critics…. in Dammers’ words, “aimed at everyone”. Portico Quartet Described as being like an Indy band that plays post-jazz, Portico Quartet (Nick Mulvey hang drum, Duncan Bellamy drums, Milo Fitzpatrick double bass and Jack Wyllie saxophones and electronics) play melodic, beautiful, rhythmic music that mixes the inspiration of Philip Glass and Steve Reich with a very contemporary kind of jazz improvisation. It’s the blend of ethereal saxophone, the steel pan-like Hang, clattering drums and earthy double-bass that gives their music it’s unique, beautiful sound and that has seen them compared to the Radiohead, E.S.T and The Cinematic Orchestra amongst others. Their new album ‘Isla’, produced by legendary producer John Leckie was released to critical acclaim last October. 5th Mar - Pontardawe Arts Centre, Swansea 8th Mar - Barbican, London 11th Mar - Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal 12th Mar - Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool 13th Mar - The Sage Gateshead 14th Mar - Band On The Wall, Manchester 16th Mar - South Hill Park Wilde Theatre, Bracknell 18th Mar - Turner Sims, Southampton 19th Mar - De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill 20th Mar - Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry 21st March - Royal & Derngate, Northampton For further information please contact sian@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Robert Glasper Brooklyn based pianist Robert Glasper brings a genuine understanding of hip hop to his music. But where some jazzers add samples and beats in an attempt to ground their music in contemporary culture, Glasper’s music is a far more organic affair as he takes rhythms and grooves from hip hop and adds them to his already formidable trio’s powerful arsenal. 8th & 9th Feb - Ronnie Scotts, London For further information please contact kerstan@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Pat Metheny - Orchestrion Orchestrion brings a musical idea from the late 19th and early 20th centuries - a large mechanical multi-instrument device that utilises actual orchestral instruments of various types, called an “orchestrion” - to the technologies of today. Metheny’s concept includes a large ensemble of acoustic instruments - including several pianos, drum kit, marimbas, “guitar-bots”, dozens of percussion instruments and even cabinets of carefully tuned bottles. Through Metheny’s guitar and compositional mind, five new original pieces showcase the instruments as they are struck, plucked, and otherwise played via the technology of solenoid switches and pneumatics. Metheny worked for months with a brilliant team of scientists and engineers to develop and assemble the “New Orchestrion” for this project, which he will perform with 'solo'. 10th February - Barbican For further information please contact sian@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Trichotomy Inspired by a diverse range of influences from Aphex Twin to Vijay Iyer, and Tortoise to The Bad Plus, Australian trio Trichotomy’s music combines a dense rhythmic focus with the melodic clarity of a Pat Metheny, Brad Mehldau or Stravinsky. And like fellow Australians The Necks, whom they cite as an early influence, there is a remarkable attention to detail and a desire to allow ideas to develop naturally within their music. A key focus is the balance between piano/bass/drums, with the trio maintaining a free flowing three way conversation with no one dominating and all contributing integral parts. They tour here in support of their UK debut release, Variations.
