Sonny Criss The RVG Remasters |
This is Criss Out September 2008 |
www.concordmusicgroup.com |
| In 1966 Sonny Criss was brought to New York for a recording session with a rhythm section handpicked for their ability to swing and for their understanding of the bebop methods that drove Criss. To many listeners, This Is Criss! was a revelation; it presented a fully matured soloist who had overcome the uneven conception and time problems that many of them remembered from his brilliant but erratic earlier work. With Walter Davis, Paul Chambers, Alan Dawson. For further information please contact julie@riotsquadpublicity.com |

Red Garland Trio The RVG Remasters |
Groovy Out September 2008 |
www.concordmusicgroup.com |
| Red Garland was an important member of the Davis quintet as a soloist, interactive accompanist, and keeper of the repertory. Being in Miles's group gave Garland the exposure he otherwise would not have gotten. Once his talent was established, he was signed to Prestige as a recording leader in his own right. Groovy was the third in Red's trio series for Prestige and it has the usual fine mix of jazz standards, ballad standards, blues ballads, and just plain blues - an object lesson in finding and maintaining a groove. With Paul Chambers, on bass, and drummer Arthur Taylor.

Wes Montgomery Keepnews Collection |
Incredible Jazz Guitar Out October 2008 |
www.concordmusicgroup.com |
| Though he was never able to read music notation Montgomery possessed an unfailing command of the blues and of ballad tempo and was an impressive composer. There were at least three unique aspects to his performing style, comments Keepnews: he played with his thumb, never used a pick… and his solos almost invariably included two elements routinely referred to as ‘impossible’—his use of octaves and of pianistic block chords.
Personnel: Wes Montgomery on guitar and pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath.

Personnel: McCoy Tyner on piano and various others, including flutist Hubert Laws, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Billy Cobham

Thelonious Monk Keepnews Collection |
Thelonious Himself Out October 2008 |
www.concordmusicgroup.com |
| This, you might say, is an album of undiluted Monk …. Monk, alone in the recording studio, offering highly personal versions of some standards and some of his own tunes. The overall tone is reflective, tempos relaxed and a good deal of that sometimes deceptive feeling of searching for an idea to explore, of unexpectedly finding in a single note or phrase the impetus for a full chorus that follows.
