The saxophonist and clarinetist has deftly incorporated reggae, electronica, hip-hop, funk and Eastern sounds into his boundary-defying repertoire, working alongside luminaries in each genre. These very special shows find Pine revisiting his latest, acclaimed album Europa, an ambitious exploration of the very idea of the European continent and the forces that have shaped it, drawing on influences from Gregorian chant to Scandinavian, Celtic, Hungarian and Mediterranean melodies and beyond. Featuring Pine on bass clarinet, Robert Fordjour, drums, Darren Taylor double bass, Zoe Rahman piano and Cameron Pierre mandolin and acoustic guitar. His distinctive songwriting and vocal and guitar style helping pave the way to AWB's extraordinary worldwide success. Since AWB split up Stuart has worked with the likes of Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and George Benson. His work with bands such as Cream and the Tony Williams Lifetime, as well as his solo material, unlocked the doors to the pent-up energy of a new approach to the art of sound, breaking the barriers of tradition and creating a kind of music that had never been heard. He appears here with his aptly titled Big Blues Band for what should be four nights of unforgettable music. Since 1968, Tower of Power has delivered their unique brand of music to their fans, appearing before sold out crowds as they tour the world each year. Tower’s sound can be hard to categorize, but the band's leader and founding member, Emilio Castillo, has labeled their sound as "Urban Soul Music. Tower's rhythm section lays down a groove like no other band. The band’s horn driven sound is unique, and the way they approach everything, from writing and arranging to mixing and performing, is totally their own. Combine all of that with an outstanding lead vocalist and you have one of the most dynamic groups of musicians to ever hit the stage. Mondon 12th March / Doors 6pm / £12.50 - £22.50 JAZZWISE15 DOUBLE BILL: TROYK-ESTRA & ARUN GHOSH QUINTET The Jazzwise curated festival kicks off with a unique double bill. In a special commission for this concert the highly acclaimed, power-house, jazz-prog-electronica trio, TROYKA, are partnered with the stunning Royal Academy of Music Big Band, led by the Academy's head of jazz, Nick Smart, to form the TROYK-ESTRA. The music is fuelled by textural guitar loops, displaced drum grooves, big band brass and an evocative lyricism that is utterly absorbing. TROYKA's Chris Montague, Kit Downes and Josh Blackmore have arranged music from their debut self titled release in 2009, and brand new material from their highly anticipated second release (scheduled for June 2012 on Edition records). Rounding out a superb night is the sublime Arun Ghosh Quintet, led by the Manchester raised, London based clarinetist and composer Ghosh and noted for his inimitable mix of Asian and Western melodies and grooves. Featuring Idris Rahman, tenor saxophone, Chris Williams, alto saxophone, Liran Donin - double bass and Rastko Rasic drums. Tuesday 13th March / Doors 6pm / £12.50 - £22.50 JAZZWISE15 DOUBLE BILL: EMPIRICAL & MICHAEL WOLLNY'S [em] A superlative double-bill, featuring the sharp-suited poster boys of British Jazz, the hard-hitting, post-bop outfit Empirical and rising-star German pianist Wollny and his much-lauded trio. Empirical should really need no introduction. The project of four young, British Jazz musicians, who aim to expand on the traditions of Jazz, their unique music manages to be both timeless and totally now, inside and out. In just a few short years they have carved out a place as one of jazz's most exciting new bands, touring from New York to Molde, London to Montreal, and they have won numerous awards including the 2010 MOBO for Best Jazz Act and Jazzwise and Mojo Albums of the Year. Elements Of Truth is their third album, and second with the current line-up of Nathaniel Facey alto saxophone, Shaney Forbes drums, Tom Farmer bass and Lewis Wright vibraphone. Rising star's of the European jazz scene, pianist Wollny's [em] have been hailed as heir apparent to the late great Esbjörn Svensson's band EST and share much of the same modus operandi shifting from powerful anthems to tender lyricism while exploring the sonic possibilities of the trio's format. Wednesday 14th Mach - Thursday 15th March / Doors 6.00pm / £20.00 - £40.00 JAZZWISE15: RON CARTER'S FOURSIGHT PRESENTING DEAR MILES + Support Wednesday: Zara MacFarlane Band + Support Thursday: Josh Arcoleo Quartet Astonishingly brilliant bassist Ron Carter has been one of jazz's biggest stars since making his name with Miles Davis in the '60s. A superlative technician with an instantly recognisable sound he appears here with a fine band, featuring top class pianist Renee Rosnes, percussionist Rolando Morales-Matos and drummer Payton Crossley, paying tribute to his erstwhile boss, the great Miles Davis. Support on Wednesday comes Gilles Peterson endorsed jazz-singer MacFarlane (her debut was released on his Brownswood imprint), and on Thursday from acclaimed young saxophonist Arcoleo (the latest talent to be unearthed by the UK's Edition Records) appearing with a fine quartet featuring Peter Gabriel pianist Tom Cawley, Empirical bassist Tom Farmer and fine young drummer Josh Blackmore. Friday 16th March - Saturday 17th March / Doors 6.00pm &10.30pm (two shows) £20.00 - £42.50 JAZZWISE15 : CHRIS POTTER + Support Friday: Laura Jurd Quartet + Support Thursday: Sara Mitra Sextet A world-class soloist, accomplished composer and formidable bandleader, saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. Down Beat called him "One of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet" while Jazz Times identified him as "a figure of international renown." Jazz sax elder statesman Dave Liebman called him simply, "one of the best musicians around," a sentiment shared by the readers of Down Beat in voting him second only to tenor sax great Sonny Rollins in the magazine's 2008 Readers Poll. He appears here with a new band featuring pianist David Virelles, bassist Joe Martin and top class drummer Gerald Cleaver. Support on Friday comes from fine young contemporary trumpeter Jurd and on Saturday from rising star singer-songwriter Mitra and her sextet. The trio is also noted for allowing all it’s members and equal voice in shaping the direction of the music through changing its tempo, mood, texture, or form, through a system of musical cues. As a result, each trio member’s enormous individual talent is showcased along with the powerfully rhythmic group sound. A regular with the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, she is one of Britain’s most loved performers. Turner’s first break came with blues legend Alexis Korner before scoring huge hits with I would Rather Go Blind and It’s Gonna Be Alright (one of the few British songs to top the American R&B Charts) in the ‘80s. Saturday 24th March / Doors 6.00pm &10.30pm (two shows) £25.00 - £42.50 Drizabone Soul Family + Support: The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars Originally coming to prominence in the 1990's with the worldwide smash "Real Love", the band are now led by founder Billy Freeman. The two principal vocalists on the new project are Anneka Johnson and Nataya, supported here by their full live band. Their latest album “All The Way”, which is produced and co-written by Freeman has received rave reviews and has included two singles which have been playlisted on Radio 2. Monday 26th March / Doors 6.00pm / £18 - £32.50 AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE + Support: Robert Mitchell’s 3io Before he reached eighteen, Ambrose Akinmusire had already performed with a string of acclaimed musicians including Joe Henderson, Joshua Redman and Steve Coleman. He’s since gone on to play in the bands of Herbie Hancock, Jason Moran and Wayne Shorter and has won acclaim from the likes of Quincy Jones and Hugh Masekela for his playing. Ronnie’s was bursting at the seams for the blazing premiere of his Blue Note debut When The Heart Emerges Glistening, which offers a powerful exercise in intelligent interplay and subtle melodic development, and the exhilarating performance garnered five star reviews in both the Guardian and Financial Times. This show (part of his first UK tour) features support comes from award winning pianist, composer, arranger and teacher, Robert Mitchell who, since his recording debut a decade ago, has become one of the most creative pianists on the British jazz scene. Trained by keyboardists Bill Doggett and Jimmy Smith, Peterson went on to play behind the likes of Little Milton, and Bobby “Blue” Bland, learning his craft and become one of the finest blues musicians in the world. He has been hailed by The New Yorker as “a master of the guitar, organ and microphone” and appears here with a superb band featuring Lucky on Hammond B3, Fender Rhodes, guitar and vocals, Timothy Waites bass, Raul Valdes on drums, Rico McFarland on guitar and Mrs Lucky Peterson, Tamara, herself an outstanding performer joining them on vocals.
