Neil Cowley: Dudley Moore

Radio Doc:  Neil n Dud The Other Side of Dudley Moore

Date:   BBC Music Jazz, Friday 13th November 6pm – 7pm

Neil Cowley is an award winning pianist and composer and Dudley Moore’s number one fan.  Earlier this year, Cowley presented ‘The Other Side of Dudley Moore’, two sell out shows at London Ronnie Scott’s. With wit, flair and compassion he delivered a revealing and personal insight into his hero exploring why one of the UK’s greatest talents became more famous as the funny man from ‘Not only But Also…’ than the remarkably consummate and passionate pianist he was. The show was “ A triumphantly diverse tribute to Moore as a sidelined jazz maestro, sympathetically told by a lifelong devotee” said the Guardian.

As a companion to the live shows, Neil Cowley and Jazz FM created Neil n’ Dud; the Other Side of Dudley Moore, a one hour programme broadcast on Jazz Fm as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations. Such was its success that the documentary is to be broadcast on BBC Music Jazz, the temporary pop-up digital station that runs from 12th – 15th November and sees Jazz Fm, BBC Radio and the EFG London Jazz Festival collaborate for the first time.

Neil n’ Dud – The Other Side of Dudley Moore celebrates the musical talent of Dudley Moore, better known as an actor and comedian, through the eyes of fellow pianist and lifelong fan Neil Cowley.

Through his journey, Neil discovers Dudley’s musical path was similar to his own and that he has much in common with his hero. This is a touching story that features music from Dudley’s many album releases, songs re-recorded by Neil, anecdotes and stories alongside a good dollop of humour. The programme also includes exclusive audio from a recently uncovered interview between Dudley and Jazz FM founder Dave Lee recorded for Christmas Day in 1990. Neil’s account reveals why Dudley Moore’s music tells us far more about him as a person, than his comedy ever could.

BBC Music Jazz aims to offer listeners the very best of jazz music with something for everyone from complete beginners to aficionados. It broadcasts across the UK on digital radio, online and mobile from 2pm on Thursday 12th November 2015 – midnight Sunday 15th November 2015.  Jazz FM will offer access to their flagship programmes and rare archive recordings alongside live content from BBC Radio 3’s collaboration with EFG London Jazz Festival and bespoke content from BBC Radios 2, 4, 6 and BBC Radio Scotland. Amongst many other highlights, there is an opening programme from Jamie Cullum, a celebration for Billie Holiday’s centenary, Jazz FM’s 1990 Royal Albert Hall launch night concert from Ella Fitzgerald and the Count Basie Orchestra while BBC’s Geoffrey Smith joins with Jazz FMs Helen Mayhew to countdown the 50 Greatest Jazz Artists as voted for by listeners.

Neil n’ Dud – The Other Side of Dudley Moore is presented by Neil Cowley and produced by Nick Pitts/Jazz FM. It broadcasts on BBC Music Jazz on Friday 13th November from 6pm until 7pm.
